In October last year, I wrote a post about Brian Tamaki and the Destiny Church.  Over the last few days it has become apparent that sections of  of the church’s membership are waking up to the true character of their ‘Bishop’, his wife and his lieutenants. Among those lieutenants, Richard Lewis, who has appeared twice on Campbell Live, once to answer questions about the church  and, a couple of nights ago, to refuse to answer questions about the church,  presents a particularly daunting, almost menacing image. It is as hard to reconcile that image with the practice of what one might call ‘true Christianity’ as it is to reconcile the Tamakis’ lifestyle with the teachings of Christ. That disconnect, as former church member Matthew Coleman told John Campbell last night, is essentially what the disaffected members of the church’s Brisbane congregation are no longer able to accept.

It is possible that the rigorous discipline practised within Destiny Church has been instrumental in turning around the lives of men who might otherwise have ended up in the prison system, but no amount of good works can disguise the fact that it is Tamaki and his wife Hannah who have benefited most from the organisation which they founded.

Whether  the events in Brisbane mark the beginning of the end of Destiny Church remains to be seen. The history of cults suggests otherwise. Cults survive through mind-manipulation, bullying and fear. They are invariably easier to join than they are to leave. But the signs are at least encouraging that the members of Destiny Church are finally getting wise to the real ambition, the real motivation of their homophobic, misogynistic, deluded leader.

  1. “It is possible that the rigorous discipline practised within Destiny Church has been instrumental in turning around the lives of men who might otherwise have ended up in the prison system…”

And Mussolini got the trains to run on time, don’t you know?

  2. Now, where have I seen similar historic photos from the mid 20th Century depicting a particularly vile character with a toothbrush moustache in a similar pose – the words ‘Sieg Heil’ come readily to mind.

  3. I wonder if the Brisbane congregation did the Aussie Haka before they walked out.

In spite of an effort to be charitable I do feel that Bishop Tamaki does for Christianity what Sweeny Todd did for hairdressing.

  4. You have to admire his aspirations. The Anglicans are NZs biggets landlord with their huge property empire, the Catholics have their own gilded city, poor Brian has a lot of catching up to do.
He certainly is the medias favorite whipping boy though but I cant see why in a free tolerant country.

Because his lifestyle is utterly at odds with the lifestyle and teaching of the leader he professes to follow. And because that lifestyle is made possible only by the sacrifices of the much poorer members of his church. And because he shows signs of egomania and megalomania. That ought to do.

  5. Although I dislike the Bishop and his wolf in sheeps clothing guise I really dont see the difference in what alot of NZs wealth creators do.Find a rich vein and exploit it. Im sure our PMs wealth ,although as not blatantly obtained, created hardship somewhere. My personal view is that for one man to become rich another must become poor and the Bishop has taken this and run with it quite sucessfully it might seem. The turnaround in mens lives could be achieved without the financial burden being imposed on the Bishops followers.Possibly not as much fun for the Bishop though.

Well, that may all well be true. But this isn’t really the sort of behaviour we should expect from a Christian pastor. Indeed it is totally at odds with the teaching of Christ whom Tamaki claims to represent.

  6. A christian pastor building his own Kingdom on Earth.
Not sure the big boss is gonna like this come the St Peter @ the Gate moment that Tamaki bleats (howls) about. Plenty of time for repentance though in his convenient sin/repent sin/repent model for healthy living.

If these actions were carried out in the name of business should they be any more acceptable? Not in my book.Unfortunately I dont think hes alone in the field of poor behaviour by Christian pastors, possibly might make the top 50 though.

  8. 1. has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
    2. is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
    3. believes that he or she is “special” and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
    4. requires excessive admiration
    5. has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations
    6. is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
    7. lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others
    8. is often envious of others or believes others are envious of him or her
    9. shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes.
How many of the boxes can we tick for narcissistic personality disorder??

  9. I’d rather see the media ask some hard questions of Peter Hujlich, Don Brash and John Banks.
If Brian Tamaki is able to convince his followers to give him their hard earned then thats their problem.

Well you may have a point that there are more serious targets. But civilised societies normally try to protect even the naive against charlatans.

  10. “I’d rather see the media ask some hard questions of Peter Hujlich, Don Brash and John Banks. If Brian Tamaki is able to convince his followers to give him their hard earned then thats their problem”

Brian Tamaki claims to be the only one with a direct line to *God* as a result his devotee’s are not allowed any other point of reference apart from his dogma, not only this but he uses his megalomaniacal position to plunder the coffers of a challenged socio-economic that may have not had the same educational social or fiscal opportunities as you “Mikeysmokes”

    Were is your moral integrity??

I wouldn’t like to meet you one an overnight bus anywhere.

    Sheesh!

  11. Even though these people and many others should come under media scrutiny it should not mean that the followers of Tamaki should be ignored and left to adress their problems. Im sure if the people of Germany had been given greater guidance Hitler would have been stopped in his tracks alot earlier.People losing their “hard earned”to tamaki will have to fund the deficit somehow whether it be greater reliance on WINZ,theft from non believers, starving their children,or any other illegal or immoral activities. All of us end up having to pick up the pieces of this kind of insanity whether we like it or not.

  12. I wonder if, now that Destiny have bought viewing time on the commercial network, the program will be preceded with a statement like all other Infomercials – “The following is a paid advertisement by The Destiny Church” and if there will be a little “watermark” somewhere on the screen to indicate that it is just that. I won’t hold my breath.

    Sheesh!

Whats the difference between Brian Tamaki and the Pope Mel?
And why wouldn’t you want to meet me on an overnight bus bus anywhere? because I come from some of the very communities that Tamaki targets?
