If Judy Bailey was the “mother of the nation” then Paul Holmes would undoubtedly be its “father”. I don’t recall anyone who had dominated broadcasting in the past 20 years in the way he did.
I have always felt it rather sad that one has to die in order for all these nice things to be said.
In life one can be a total ratbag (no, I am not suggesting that of PH) but in death beatification follows. If one is a ratbag in life why does death alter that?
When BE shuffles off this mortal coil I imagine that even the gentleman who referred to him as ‘pontificating Irish garbage’ will discover hitherto hidden virtues.
Just to be clear; I have no quarrel with what is said about PH; I just think it could have all been said rather earlier.

RIP Paul Holmes. A glance at your successor at Newstalk ZB convinces me you were of greater quality than I gave you credit for.

R.I.P Sir Paul. One of a kind and will be sorely missed.
